Conwy Tunnel Vehicle Fire – Latest information

Posted

update with fire engine and crest

A major incident was declared yesterday following a vehicle fire in the Conwy Tunnel on the westbound A55. Reported at 13:48, the incident triggered an immediate and coordinated multi-agency response. Thanks to the quick and effective efforts of all teams involved, the fire was brought under control, and we can confirm there were no fatalities.

Today, progress continues: a contraflow system has been put in place in the eastbound tunnel, allowing one lane of traffic in each direction. The westbound tunnel remains closed currently as detailed inspections and safety assessments are ongoing.

Motorists are advised to:

  • Allow extra time for journeys.
  • Plan routes in advance and follow the latest traffic guidance.
  • Check Traffic Wales and their social media channels regularly for real-time updates.

With a busy and sunny weekend ahead, congestion is expected—especially along the A55 and surrounding routes.

For your safety if you're caught in congestion:

  • Stay in your vehicle unless it's unsafe to do so.
  • Keep your engine off if stationary for long periods.
  • If available, use air conditioning, or open windows, to keep your vehicle’s interior cool
  • Keep hydrated—carry water if you're setting off on long journeys.

We thank the public once again for their continued patience and cooperation as work continues to fully reopen the tunnel and restore normal traffic conditions.
