North Wales Fire and Rescue Service is appealing to members of the community to help ensure the safety of their elderly relatives and neighbours after an 87 year old man was hospitalised following a fire in his home.

Two crews from Caernarfon were called to the property on Hendre Street, Caernarfon at 21.52hrs last night (Wednesday December 2) after receiving a call from a neighbour reporting smoke and carried the occupant, an 87 year old man, outside to safety.

They administered oxygen and treated his burns before transferring to the care of paramedics at the scene. He was later transferred to hospital for treatment.

There were no smoke alarms fitted at the property to give early warning of the fire.

The man suffered burns to his feet and right leg, and is currently in hospital receiving treatment.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Darren Jones from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Sadly, despite our best efforts to ensure working smoke alarms are fitted in every property in North Wales, a small minority of people still do not have these potentially life saving devices fitted in their homes.

“We offer free home safety checks for all residents in the region - a member of the Service will visit your home, give safety hints and tips, help you to formulate a fire escape plan and fit new alarms - all free of charge.

“I’d ask everyone to consider elderly or vulnerable family or neighbours, and ensure they get their home checked too. The early warning provided by a smoke alarm can provide vital minutes to help them escape unharmed.”
