Electric Blanket Safety

Electric blankets are one of the leading causes of bedroom fires, particularly for older people. Following a few simple rules can significantly reduce the risk.

Before you use it

Check your blanket for:

  • Scorch marks or burns.
  • Fraying fabric or exposed wires.
  • Damp or water damage.
  • Mould or discolouration.

If you spot any of these, stop using the blanket immediately and replace it.

Using it safely

  • Always follow the manufacturer's instructions. Some blankets are designed to be left on overnight, others are not.
  • Never use a hot water bottle in bed at the same time as an electric blanket.
  • Replace your blanket in line with the manufacturer's guidance, if you don't know how old it is or have lost the instructions, replace it.
  • Only buy blankets that carry the BEAB Approved mark or a British Standard Kitemark.
  • Never buy second-hand. You cannot know the blanket's history or condition.

Storing It

  • Store flat or loosely rolled, never fold it, as this damages the internal wiring.
  • Keep it dry and away from damp areas.
